Why is that important? These farms and families have put a tremendous amount of time, effort, money, and sweat into producing the cleanest and most respected products in the region. We celebrate their efforts by telling their stories in our shop. We have a full, firsthand understanding of the soil compositions, grazing schedules, rotational strategies, breeding methods, and processing procedures to ensure we are bringing the community the highest quality local meat. We take pride in the Farm to Butcher to Table concept but also appreciate the level of effort it takes to get from Farm to Butcher to Table.
Long Stone Farm – Lovettsville, VA
Long Stone Farm is a grass-based diversified livestock operation located in Lovettsville, VA at the base of Short Hill Mountain. Long Stone produces non-GMO pastured pork, beef, lamb, chicken and eggs on over 300 acres in Loudoun County. Long Stone Farm is owned and farmed with care by Justin and Casey Wisch, and their children Piper, Boone, Timber and Tucker Rye. The Wisch family focuses on producing high-quality meat and eggs in managed grazing systems that are beneficial to livestock and surrounding ecosystems. We farm without the use of harmful pesticides, insecticides, and herbicides. All of our meat and eggs are antibiotic and hormone-free.
We farm with a focus on soil, animal, plant and human health. Rotational grazing, multi-species grazing, cover cropping and low/no-tillage planting are a few farming practices we utilize. We care about our surrounding ecosystems and our farming practices provide habitat and forage for pollinators and wildlife. Farming and conservation can be harmonious when done properly. We aspire to protect more farmland in Loudoun County and hope to purchase additional acreage in the future if possible. Supporting our farm will help us protect this beautiful county!
Whiffletree Farms – Warrenton, VA
Here, we do things differently. Our farming practices aim to collaborate with nature, in a way that benefits everything involved– land, animals, and people. To collaborate in this way, it is critical to recognize and facilitate the natural cycle found in all healthy ecosystems: movement, nourishment, then rest.
Movement is what most farmers are not doing because it is labor-intensive and risky. It takes a lot of work and planning and intelligence to move animals around fresh pasture. Mobile infrastructure is vulnerable. Stationary steel and concrete buildings give a lot of control and labor saving– but they give up the things that provide animals and land a natural system of life and health. Movement is what nature asks of us. And we work hard to make it happen, so that everyone and everything benefits, start to finish.
Keenbell Farm – Rockville, VA
In the 1970s Keenbell Farm began to furrow pigs, and had a feeder pig operation of 500 head, though all while maintaining a beef cattle operation. When the hog market fell under in the 1980s we focused on the cattle operation, hay, and other crops. Such as corn, wheat, barley, and soybeans.
Over the years, we have continued a small hay operation off a few acres, while the rest of the land was leased to a fellow farmer. In 2005, we started renovations on the farm to resurrect the farm from mother earth whom has taken its toll on her over the years. Slowly we converted back land that had been leased out to a conventional grain farmer, and put it back into pasture for our natural meat operation and started growing specialty non-gmo grains in particular food grade heritage varieties. Now we personally farm 350 acres, with that acreage split between our livestock and specialty grains. Our standards are in line with certified natural/organic, and work to be on the cutting edge of conservation practices for which we have won several awards. If it were not for the help and support from our family and friends all of this would not have been possible. Thanks most of all to Joe, and Kathleen whose blessing allowed us to begin this journey.
